How to Clean Waterproof Laminate Flooring Without Damaging the Surface

Waterproof laminate flooring has a different surface than regular laminate. The waterproof treatment means you can clean it differently. But it still needs proper care to avoid damage. Here is the right way to clean and maintain waterproof laminate.

Daily and Weekly Cleaning

Sweep or dust mop daily. Grit and sand are the biggest enemy of any laminate floor. They act like sandpaper underfoot. Over time, they scratch the finish layer. A soft bristle broom or a microfiber dust mop is best. Avoid vacuum cleaners with beater bars. The rotating brush can scratch the surface.

For weekly cleaning, use a damp microfiber mop. The key word is damp, not wet. Wring the mop until it is barely moist. Too much water will find its way into the seams even with waterproof treatment.

Do Not Steam Mop

This is important. Steam mops produce high temperature steam that can damage the locking mechanism. The heat causes the planks to expand. The moisture seeps into the joints. Even waterproof laminate is not designed for steam cleaning.

Many homeowners learn this the hard way. The floor looks fine for the first few steam mop uses. Then the edges start to swell. By the time you notice the damage, the floor needs replacement.

What Cleaning Products to Use

Use a manufacturer recommended laminate floor cleaner. These are pH neutral and designed for laminate surfaces. Mix with water according to the instructions. Do not use the following products:

- Vinegar and water mixtures (vinegar is acidic and dulls the finish)

- Bleach or ammonia based cleaners

- Wax or polish products (laminate has a factory finish that should not be coated)

- Oil soaps (they leave a film that attracts dirt)

If you need to disinfect the floor, use a diluted isopropyl alcohol solution. Test it in an inconspicuous area first. Wipe up immediately and do not let it sit on the surface.

Dealing With Stains

Most stains on waterproof laminate are easy to remove. For food spills, wipe immediately with a damp cloth. For sticky residues like gum or candle wax, freeze the spot with an ice pack and carefully scrape with a plastic scraper.

For ink or marker stains, use a microfiber cloth with a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Gently dab the stain. Do not scrub hard or you may dull the finish.

Long Term Maintenance Tips

Place doormats at all entry points. This catches grit before it reaches the floor. Use felt pads under furniture legs to prevent scratches. Trim pet nails regularly. Replace worn felt pads on chair legs.

Clean up spills immediately. Even though the floor is classified as waterproof, no laminate product can handle standing water indefinitely. Spills left overnight can still cause damage at the seams.
