Can You Install SPC Flooring Over Radiant Heating Thickness and Temperature Guide
SPC flooring and radiant heating can work together under the right conditions. The thickness of the SPC plank matters more than many buyers realize. This guide explains what works and what does not.
Why 4mm SPC Is Not Recommended for Radiant Heating
4mm SPC is thinner and transfers heat more quickly to the room. However the thinner core is more susceptible to deformation from repeated heating and cooling cycles. The constant temperature changes cause the thin core to expand and contract more noticeably. Over time this can lead to peaking at the seams, curling at the edges, and gapping between planks during cooling periods.
For these reasons 4mm SPC should not be installed over radiant heating systems even though the heat transfer is better.
Why 5mm and Thicker SPC Works Better
5mm and 6mm SPC planks have a thicker core that provides more dimensional stability. The additional material mass distributes temperature changes more evenly across the plank. This reduces the stress on individual areas of the core.
Thicker SPC also provides better resistance to the constant expansion and contraction cycles that heated floors create. The locking mechanism holds more securely when the core has sufficient thickness.
The recommended minimum for SPC over radiant heating is 5mm. For larger rooms or commercial spaces, 6mm is preferred.
Temperature Limits for SPC
Most SPC products are rated for surface temperatures up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The recommended maximum surface temperature is 85 degrees Fahrenheit. The water temperature in the radiant system should not exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
Temperature changes must be gradual. Rapid changes cause expansion issues. Increase and decrease temperature slowly over several hours.
Heat Transfer Efficiency
SPC flooring is not the best conductor of heat. The stone content makes it denser but not as thermally conductive as tile. Expect some reduction in heating efficiency compared to tile.
For best results with thicker SPC, use thin underlayment 1mm maximum. Avoid products with thick attached foam backing. Glue down SPC with full adhesive contact transfers heat better than floating installation.
Installation Requirements
When installing SPC over radiant heating:
1. Run the heating system at full temperature for 14 days before installation
2. Turn off the heating 48 hours before installation
3. Subfloor temperature must be between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit during installation
4. Allow SPC planks to acclimate in the room for 48 hours
5. After installation, gradually increase temperature over 3 days
6. Do not exceed 85 degrees Fahrenheit surface temperature after installation
What to Avoid
Do not install 4mm SPC over radiant heating. Do not install SPC over electric radiant heating mats that heat up quickly. The rapid temperature change can cause uneven expansion. Hydronic systems with gradual temperature control are the best match.
Do not use area rugs over SPC on heated floors. The rug traps heat and can cause the SPC underneath to overheat.
