Can You Paint SPC Flooring to Change the Color

Painting SPC flooring is not recommended as a long term solution. The smooth vinyl surface does not hold paint well. Paint peels, chips, and scratches off SPC within months of application. This guide explains the rare situations where painting can work and better alternatives.

Why Paint Does Not Stick

SPC flooring has a nonporous surface. Paint requires a porous surface to bond. The UV coating on SPC is specifically designed to resist adhesion. Even with primer, the paint layer is weak.

Foot traffic quickly damages painted SPC. Scratches from shoes and furniture cut through the paint layer. Once the paint is scratched, moisture gets under the paint and causes peeling.

Better Alternatives

If you want to change the color of your SPC floor, consider these alternatives:

- Area rugs cover large areas and can be changed whenever you want

- Peel and stick vinyl tiles can be installed over SPC as a temporary solution

- Floor paint designed for garage floors may have better adhesion but still is not recommended

The best solution is to replace the SPC flooring with the desired color. SPC planks can be removed and reinstalled if you want to change the floor.
