Can You Refinish Laminate Flooring What Every Homeowner Should Know

Many homeowners ask if laminate flooring can be refinished like hardwood. The short answer is no. This article explains why and what you can do instead.

Why Laminate Cannot Be Refinished

Laminate is not solid wood. It is a multi layer product. The top visible layer is a photographic print covered by a clear wear layer. This wear layer is only 0.1mm to 0.3mm thick.

Hardwood can be sanded multiple times because the wood grain runs through the entire plank. Each sanding removes a thin layer and reveals fresh wood. Laminate has no wood grain underneath the print. Sanding removes the print layer completely. What remains is the HDF core which has no decorative appearance.

Another reason is the cost. Professional hardwood refinishing costs less than replacing laminate. But the labor and material cost of sanding laminate is similar to replacement. Since laminate is more affordable than hardwood, replacement is usually the practical choice.

What About Buffing or Polishing

Some companies offer laminate buffing services. This is not refinishing. Buffing uses a mild abrasive pad to clean the surface and remove very fine scratches. It does not remove the wear layer. It only cleans the top surface.

Buffing can improve the appearance of a dull laminate floor. It removes light surface scratches and restores some gloss. The effect lasts 6 to 12 months depending on foot traffic. Buffing does not fix deep scratches, worn through wear layer, edge swelling from moisture, or faded print from UV exposure.

Laminate Restoration Products

Some manufacturers sell restoration kits for laminate flooring. These are essentially cleaning and polishing products. They apply a thin coating that fills micro scratches and adds gloss. They do not replace the wear layer.

Restoration products work best on floors that are dull but not damaged. The wear layer must still be intact. If the print layer is visible through the wear layer, restoration products will not help.

When Replacement Is the Right Choice

Laminate should be replaced rather than refinished when the wear layer is worn through to the print layer. Deep scratches or gouges penetrate the wear layer. Edge swelling from moisture cannot be fixed. The floor has visible wear patterns in high traffic areas. Multiple planks are damaged.

Laminate is one of the most affordable flooring options. Replacing a room costs less than many other flooring types. The labor cost of attempting refinishing is often similar to new installation cost.

Extending Laminate Life Without Refinishing

Use entry mats at all exterior doors. Place rugs in high traffic areas. Use felt pads under furniture. Clean regularly with a soft mop. Avoid abrasive cleaners and steam mops. Keep humidity between 35 and 65 percent.

These habits add years to laminate life. Most laminate in a home with proper care lasts 10 to 20 years before needing replacement.
