Does Sunlight Damage SPC Flooring UV Protection Guide 2024
SPC flooring is durable but direct sunlight can cause problems. This guide explains how sunlight affects SPC flooring and how to protect it.
How Sunlight Affects SPC Flooring
Direct sunlight heats the floor surface beyond its design limits. SPC flooring should not exceed a surface temperature of 28 to 30 degrees Celsius. Sunlight through windows can create hot spots that reach much higher temperatures. This heat causes the flooring to expand. If expansion is restricted the floor can warp or lift near windows. UV radiation can also cause color fading over time in some products. Quality SPC flooring has UV resistant coatings that slow this process.
Signs of Sun Damage
Edge lifting or warping near windows is the most visible sign. The planks closest to the window may show more movement. Color fading may appear as a lighter strip near the window area. Surface temperature feels noticeably hot to the touch on sunny days.
How to Protect SPC Flooring From Sunlight
Install curtains or blinds to block direct sunlight during peak hours. Apply UV protection film to windows that receive direct sun. Use area rugs near windows to reduce heat absorption. Ensure adequate expansion gap around the perimeter. Consider lighter colored flooring near windows as it absorbs less heat.
What to Do If Damage Has Occurred
If the floor has already warped identify the affected planks. Allow the floor to cool down and stabilize. If the warping is minor it may flatten when temperature normalizes. For permanent warping replace the affected planks. Before replacement address the root cause by adding window coverings.
