Glue Down vs Click Lock LVT Which Installation Method Is Better

LVT comes in two installation types. Each has different performance characteristics. Choosing the right one affects durability and appearance.

Glue Down LVT

Glue down LVT is applied directly to the subfloor with adhesive. It is thinner than click lock LVT typically 2mm to 3mm. It has no locking system. The planks are held in place by the adhesive.

Advantages: More stable under heavy rolling loads. No movement or gapping between planks. Better for commercial applications. Thinner profile works well with other flooring transitions. Better resistance to water penetration because edges are sealed. Can be installed in large open areas without expansion joints.

Disadvantages: Professional installation required. Adhesive needs 24 hours to cure. Permanent installation cannot be removed and reused. Subfloor must be very smooth. Any imperfection shows through.

Click Lock LVT

Click lock LVT has a locking system on the edges. The planks connect without adhesive. The floor floats over the subfloor.

Advantages: DIY friendly installation. Can be installed over existing flooring in some cases. No adhesive required. Easy to replace individual planks. Can be removed and reinstalled. Subfloor does not need to be perfectly smooth. Good for residential use.

Disadvantages: Can gap or shift over time. Not recommended for heavy rolling loads. Expansion joints needed in large rooms. Thicker than glue down LVT.

Which to Choose

Choose glue down LVT for commercial spaces with heavy traffic. Choose glue down for rooms with rolling loads like offices and retail stores. Choose glue down for maximum water resistance in commercial settings. Choose click lock LVT for residential DIY projects. Choose click lock for rental properties where the floor may be removed later. Choose click lock for areas where you want the option to replace individual planks.
