How Long Does Laminate Flooring Last Before Needing Replacement
Laminate flooring has a typical lifespan of 10 to 25 years depending on quality, installation, and maintenance. The exact lifespan depends on several factors. Understanding them helps you choose the right product and care for it properly.
AC Rating Determines Base Lifespan
The AC rating is the best indicator of how long laminate will last. AC2 rated laminate lasts approximately 5 to 10 years in a residential setting. This is suitable for low traffic areas like guest bedrooms.
AC3 rated laminate lasts 10 to 15 years with normal household use. This is the standard choice for most homes.
AC4 rated laminate lasts 15 to 20 years in residential use and 5 to 10 years in light commercial use.
AC5 rated laminate lasts 20 to 25 years in residential use and 10 to 15 years in commercial use.
These are estimates based on normal traffic. Actual lifespan varies with usage intensity and maintenance.
Factors That Reduce Lifespan
Moisture damage is the most common cause of premature laminate failure. A single flood or leak can destroy a laminate floor within days. Even high humidity over time can cause edge swelling.
Poor installation reduces lifespan. An uneven subfloor causes the locking mechanism to fail. Insufficient expansion gaps cause buckling. Improper acclimation leads to gapping.
Heavy traffic in a specific area can wear through the surface faster. Using rugs and furniture pads in high traffic zones extends the surface life.
Lack of maintenance shortens lifespan. Grit on the surface acts like sandpaper and wears the finish. Regular sweeping and proper cleaning prevent this.
Sunlight exposure can cause fading over 5 to 10 years. This is cosmetic damage that does not affect function but may affect appearance.
When to Replace Instead of Repair
Minor scratches on the surface can be touched up with repair kits. But deep scratches that expose the core material require plank replacement.
Water damage with edge swelling requires replacing the affected planks. Swollen laminate cannot be restored.
Widespread surface wear after 15 to 20 years usually means the entire floor needs replacement. Patch repairs on a worn floor look mismatched.
Locking mechanism failure across multiple planks means the floor cannot be reinstalled. Replacement is the only option.
How to Extend Laminate Lifespan
Regular maintenance is the key. Sweep or vacuum daily. Damp mop weekly with a laminate safe cleaner. Clean spills immediately. Use furniture pads. Maintain indoor humidity between 40 and 60 percent.
Place doormats at all entrances. This catches grit before it reaches the floor. Grit causes micro scratches that accumulate over years.
