What Damages Waterproof Laminate Flooring Common Causes and Prevention
Waterproof laminate is more water resistant than standard laminate. But it is not indestructible. Many homeowners discover this the hard way after a leak or accident. This article covers the most common causes of damage and how to prevent them.
Standing Water and Slow Leaks
Waterproof laminate can handle spills for 24 to 72 hours depending on the rating. But standing water left for days will eventually reach the core. The HDF core contains wood fiber. Wood fiber absorbs water and swells.
The most dangerous source of water damage is a slow leak. A leaking dishwasher supply line or refrigerator ice maker releases water gradually. The water spreads under the flooring without being noticed on the surface. By the time you see visible damage the core has already swollen and the planks need replacement.
Standard laminate swells 15 to 25 percent under EN 317 testing. Water resistant laminate swells 8 to 12 percent. Premium waterproof laminate swells 3 to 5 percent. Even the best waterproof laminate will swell if water sits long enough.
Check under appliances regularly. Use a moisture alarm near dishwashers and washing machines. Inspect visible pipes monthly for condensation or drips.
Steam Mops and High Heat
Steam mops are a common cause of laminate damage. The high temperature steam penetrates the locking mechanism between planks. The heat causes the core to expand and the moisture causes swelling. Many homeowners use steam mops thinking the heat sanitizes the floor. In reality it damages the laminate permanently.
Do not use steam mops on any laminate floor including waterproof rated products. Use a damp microfiber mop instead. Wring the mop until it is barely damp.
Direct sunlight can also cause damage. UV exposure fades the color over 5 to 10 years. Heat from sunlight near windows can cause planks to expand unevenly. Use curtains or blinds during peak sunlight hours.
Heavy Furniture Indentation
Waterproof laminate can dent under heavy furniture. The HDF core compresses under sustained weight. A piano, refrigerator, filled bookshelf, or heavy sofa can leave permanent indentations.
Indentation is different from scratching. The surface finish may be intact but the core below has compressed. The mark is visible as a slight depression. Over time these marks accumulate and the floor looks uneven.
Use wide furniture coasters under heavy items. The coaster distributes weight across a larger area. Check furniture pads every 6 months and replace worn pads. For very heavy items like pianos use a plywood sheet under the furniture.
Abrasive Wear From Grit
Grit and sand tracked in from outside is the most common cause of surface wear. Foot traffic grinds the grit into the surface. Over years this wears through the finish layer. The decorative layer becomes exposed.
This damage is gradual. You may not notice it until the floor looks dull in high traffic areas. By that time the finish is already worn and the floor needs replacement.
Place doormats at all entrances inside and outside. Sweep or vacuum daily with a soft brush. Use a vacuum without a beater bar. Remove shoes at the door if possible.
Pet Damage
Pet claws scratch the surface over time. Individual scratches may not be visible but accumulated scratches make the floor look worn. Pet urine left on the surface can seep through the locking mechanism.
Keep pet nails trimmed. Clean urine accidents immediately with an enzymatic cleaner. Place mats under food and water bowls.
Subfloor Moisture
Moisture from the subfloor can damage laminate from below. Concrete subfloors release moisture vapor. If the moisture level exceeds 3 pounds per 1000 square feet per 24 hours the vapor can damage the laminate core.
Test concrete moisture before installation. Use a calcium chloride test kit. If the moisture level is high install a vapor barrier. Many laminate failures are actually subfloor moisture problems not product defects.
Installation Mistakes
Insufficient expansion gap causes buckling when the floor expands. Planks that are too tight against walls have nowhere to go. The pressure causes the locking mechanism to separate and the floor to lift.
An uneven subfloor causes the locking mechanism to flex. Over time the mechanism wears and the planks separate. This is not a product defect. It is an installation issue.
Wrong underlayment can trap moisture against the laminate core. Some underlayments are not breathable and create a moisture barrier on the wrong side.
