How to Fix Scratches on Laminate Flooring Repair Methods That Work

Laminate flooring scratches easily compared to vinyl. The hard surface is durable but the printed design sits directly under the wear layer. Once a scratch reaches the print layer, it becomes very visible. This guide covers repair methods for different scratch types.

Types of Laminate Scratches

Surface scratch: only the top coating is affected. The print layer is intact. You cannot feel the scratch with your fingernail. This is the easiest to fix.

Wear layer scratch: the clear overlay is cut. The print layer is visible. You can feel the scratch. Fixable with the right technique.

Deep scratch: the print layer is damaged. The core material is exposed. This is difficult to repair cosmetically.

Gouge: a chunk of the surface is missing. Requires filling or replacement.

Method 1 Wax Repair Crayon

For scratches that have reached the print layer but are narrow, use a laminate repair wax crayon. These are available in colors that match common laminate finishes.

1. Clean the scratched area thoroughly

2. Select a wax crayon that matches the surrounding laminate color

3. Rub the crayon firmly over the scratch until the wax fills the gap

4. Scrape off excess wax with a plastic scraper

5. Buff the area with a soft cloth

6. Apply a laminate touch up marker if needed for color blending

Wax repair is not permanent. The wax can wear out over time and need reapplication. But it is quick and effective for most scratches.

Method 2 Laminate Filler Kit

For wider scratches or small gouges, use a laminate filler kit. These contain a putty or paste that hardens to match the laminate surface.

1. Clean and dry the damaged area

2. Mix the filler according to instructions

3. Apply with a fine applicator, slightly overfilling

4. Scrape off excess with a plastic scraper

5. Allow to dry fully (usually 2 to 4 hours)

6. Sand lightly with fine grit sandpaper if needed

7. Apply touch up marker or clear sealer

Filler repair is more permanent than wax. It bonds to the laminate surface.

Method 3 Replacement

For scratches that are too deep or in a very visible location, replacement is the best option. A single laminate plank can be replaced using the method described in our plank replacement guide.

Consider replacement when:

- The scratch exposes core material

- Multiple deep scratches are clustered

- The scratch is longer than 4 inches

- Repair attempts have failed

How to Avoid Scratches on Laminate

Prevention is better than repair. Use these tips:

1. Place doormats at all entrances

2. Use felt pads under all furniture legs

3. Trim pet nails regularly

4. Vacuum or sweep daily to remove grit

5. Do not drag furniture across the floor

6. Use a chair mat under office chairs

7. Remove shoes in the house
