How to Remove SPC Flooring and Replace Damaged Planks 2024

One of the best features of SPC flooring is that individual planks can be replaced without removing the entire floor. This is a major advantage over sheet vinyl or glue down flooring. This guide explains how to remove and replace damaged planks.

When to Replace a Plank

Replace a plank if it is scratched through the wear layer to the design layer. Replace if the plank is cracked or broken. Replace if the locking mechanism is damaged causing a gap. Replace if there is a manufacturing defect visible in a specific plank. Do not replace for minor surface scratches that can be concealed.

Tools Needed

You need a utility knife, pry bar or flat screwdriver, tapping block, replacement plank of the same product, measuring tape and safety gloves.

Method 1: Replacing Middle Planks

Score the damaged plank lengthwise in multiple strips using a utility knife. Cut through the center of the plank but avoid damaging adjacent planks. Remove the center strip first using a pry bar. Remove the remaining side strips. Clean the area removing all debris and old underlayment. Cut the replacement plank to remove the bottom edge of the groove side. This allows the replacement plank to slide into place. Apply construction adhesive to the subfloor where the replacement plank will sit. Slide the replacement plank into position. Tap it down using a tapping block to ensure it sits flush with surrounding planks. Wipe away any excess adhesive. Place a weighted object on the repaired area for 24 hours while the adhesive cures.

Method 2: Replacing Edge Planks Near a Wall

Remove the baseboard or quarter round near the wall. Remove planks working from the wall toward the damaged plank. This is easier than replacing a middle plank but requires removing more planks. Reinstall the removed planks and replace the wall trim.

Prevention

Use furniture pads under heavy furniture to prevent dents. Trim pet nails regularly to prevent scratches. Clean regularly to prevent grit from scratching the wear layer. Use walk off mats at entrances.
