SPC Flooring for Commercial Projects: What Specifiers Need to Know 2024

Architects designers and specifiers have specific requirements when choosing flooring for commercial projects. SPC flooring meets many commercial needs but the specifications differ from residential. This guide covers what commercial specifiers need to know.

Wear Layer Requirements

Commercial projects require thicker wear layers than residential. Light commercial offices need at least 0.5mm wear layer. Retail stores and restaurants need 0.7mm or higher. High traffic areas like shopping malls and airports need 1.0mm wear layer. The wear layer determines how long the floor lasts under commercial traffic. Specify at least 0.5mm for any commercial application.

Fire Rating Requirements

Commercial buildings require flooring that meets fire safety standards. SPC flooring typically achieves a Class 1 or Class A fire rating depending on the specific product. This means it meets the highest fire resistance classification for floor coverings. Check the specific fire test certification for the product you are specifying. ASTM E648 or NFPA 253 Class 1 is the standard for commercial flooring.

Slip Resistance

Commercial spaces need flooring with adequate slip resistance. The coefficient of friction for SPC flooring varies by surface texture. Textured finishes with embossing provide better slip resistance than smooth finishes. Specify SPC with a dynamic coefficient of friction of 0.42 or higher for commercial applications. This meets ADA recommendations for slip resistance.

Acoustic Performance

Multi story commercial buildings require sound control. IIC Impact Insulation Class ratings measure impact sound transmission. STC Sound Transmission Class ratings measure airborne sound. Specify appropriate underlayment to meet building code requirements. IIC 50 or higher is typically required for multi family and commercial buildings.

Warranty for Commercial Use

Residential warranties do not cover commercial applications. Ensure the product you specify has a commercial warranty. Most quality SPC products offer 5 to 10 year commercial warranties depending on the product line. Verify the warranty terms in writing before specifying the product.

Installation Considerations for Commercial

Commercial installation should be done by experienced professionals. The subfloor requirements are the same as residential at 3mm over 2 meters flatness. Larger commercial spaces require more expansion gaps and T-moldings. Install T-moldings at doorways and every 12 to 15 meters in long corridors. Acoustic underlayment is typically required for commercial installations above ground level.
