How to Replace a Damaged LVT Plank Glue Down vs Click Lock Methods
LVT planks can be replaced when damaged. The method is different for glue down and click lock floors. Glue down is actually simpler because there is no locking mechanism to deal with.
Replacing Glue Down LVT Simpler Method
Glue down LVT is easier to replace. There is no locking mechanism. The damaged plank is simply adhered to the subfloor.
Peel or pry the damaged plank up from the subfloor. If the adhesive is strong, use a heat gun to soften it. Work a putty knife under the edge and lift. Scrape all old adhesive from the subfloor. The surface must be clean before installing the replacement.
Apply new adhesive to the subfloor. Press the new plank into place. Use a roller to ensure full contact. Clean excess adhesive from the edges. Keep weight off the repaired area for 24 hours.
Glue down replacement is straightforward because the new plank has full contact with the subfloor. No cutting or modification of the replacement plank is needed.
Replacing Click Lock LVT More Involved
Click lock LVT has a locking system that makes replacement more involved. The damaged plank is locked into adjacent planks on all four sides.
Score the damaged plank lengthwise in multiple strips using a utility knife. Cut through the center of the plank but avoid damaging adjacent planks. Remove the center strip first. Remove the remaining side strips. Clean the area removing all debris.
Cut the locking edge off the groove side of the replacement plank. This allows the replacement plank to slide into place without clicking into adjacent planks. Without this step the replacement plank cannot be installed.
Apply construction adhesive to the subfloor where the replacement plank will sit. The adhesive holds the replacement plank in place since the locking mechanism has been removed from one side.
Slide the replacement plank into position. Press it down to ensure it sits flush. Wipe away excess adhesive. Place a weighted object on the repaired area for 24 hours.
Which Method Is Easier
Glue down is the easier repair. Peel the old plank, apply adhesive, place the new plank. No cutting of the replacement plank is needed. No locking mechanism to work around.
Click lock requires scoring, cutting the replacement plank to remove the lock, and using adhesive to hold it in place. The repair is more involved.
For both methods color matching can be difficult if the original product has been discontinued. Order spare planks with your original order for future repairs.
