How Vietnam SPC Flooring Factories Compare to China in Production Technology

When considering sourcing SPC flooring from Vietnam, US importers ask about production quality. The technology and equipment used in Vietnamese factories determine whether the output matches Chinese manufacturing standards. Here is an honest comparison of production technology in both countries.

Equipment and Production Lines

The machinery used to produce SPC flooring is similar worldwide. Chinese manufacturers build most of the extrusion lines used globally. Factories in Vietnam typically buy the same Chinese made equipment. A twin screw extruder from a Chinese manufacturer works the same way whether it runs in Jiangsu or Hanoi.

Some newer Vietnamese factories have installed equipment from European suppliers for higher precision. European made calendering lines and UV coating machines offer better consistency. But these are the exception rather than the norm.

In general, the equipment gap between Chinese and Vietnamese factories is narrowing. Chinese factories have more lines and higher total output. Vietnamese factories are building newer lines with better automation.

Quality Control Systems

Chinese factories that have been exporting for years have established quality control systems. They test raw materials, monitor production parameters, and inspect finished goods. These systems have been refined over thousands of production runs.

Vietnamese factories are catching up. Many have adopted ISO 9001 certification as a baseline. QC teams are trained by experienced managers, sometimes seconded from Chinese partner factories. The gap in quality control is mainly about experience, not capability.

For standard products, QC in Vietnam is adequate. For complex products requiring tight tolerances, Chinese factories still have an edge in process control.

Labor Skills and Training

The SPC flooring industry in Vietnam has been growing for about 5 years. The workforce is younger on average. Experienced production managers, line operators, and QC inspectors are less common.

Chinese factories have operators who have run the same machine for 8 to 10 years. They know exactly how to adjust settings for different formulations. This experience shows in consistency and yield rates. Less experienced operators have higher waste rates and more variation between batches.

Vietnamese factories invest heavily in training. Many send staff to China for training before opening new production lines. Within a few years of operation, the workforce becomes competent. But it takes time to build the deep knowledge that comes from handling every possible production issue.

Product Range and Customization

Chinese factories offer a wider range of products. Thickness options, size variations, surface finishes, and attachment types are more varied. Custom development cycles are shorter because the supply chain for specialty materials is local.

Vietnamese factories focus on the most popular products first. Standard 5mm and 6mm SPC planks, the most common sizes and wear layers. Custom requests take longer to develop because specialty raw materials must be sourced from China or elsewhere.

Which Factory to Use

For standard SPC products at volume, Vietnamese factories are competitive and offer tariff advantages. For specialty products, unusual sizes, or complex surface finishes, Chinese factories offer faster development and more experience.
