Is Laminate Flooring Waterproof The Truth About Swell Rates

Many laminate products are marketed as waterproof. The reality is that laminate has an HDF core made from compressed wood fiber. Wood absorbs water. No amount of coating can change that. Understanding the different levels of water resistance helps you make the right choice.

The Standard EN 317 Test

Laminate water resistance is measured by the EN 317 thickness swell test. A sample is submerged in water for 24 hours. The thickness increase is measured as a percentage.

Standard laminate 15 to 25 percent thickness swell. The core absorbs water like a sponge. Once the core moisture exceeds 18 percent the swelling is irreversible. The planks must be replaced.

Water resistant laminate 8 to 10 percent thickness swell. These products have a treated or modified HDF core often black in color. They can handle spills for 48 to 100 hours without visible damage. But they will still swell if water is left long enough.

Super waterproof laminate 3 to 5 percent thickness swell. These use special high density HDF cores with advanced sealing. Some brands claim 500 hours of water resistance. At 5 percent swell the planks are functional but not dimensionally perfect.

For comparison SPC flooring has a stone plastic composite core. The thickness swell rate is effectively 0 percent. The core contains no wood fiber and does not absorb water.

What Waterproof Laminate Claims Actually Mean

Water resistant 48 to 72 hours of protection against spills. The planks can survive minor accidents if cleaned promptly.

72 hour waterproof 72 hours of protection. Suitable for kitchens with moderate spill risk but not for standing water.

500 hour waterproof Up to 500 hours of protection. This is the highest tier of laminate water resistance. These products cost significantly more and still use a wood based core.

No laminate is truly waterproof. The core always contains wood fiber. Given enough time and moisture the core will swell. True waterproof requires a PVC or mineral based core.

Where You Can Safely Use Each Tier

Standard laminate 12 to 18 percent swell rate: Living rooms bedrooms hallways home offices. Dry areas only. Wipe spills immediately.

Water resistant laminate 8 to 12 percent swell rate: Kitchens with reasonable spill risk. Dining rooms. Entryways with covered exterior. Use rugs near sinks.

Super waterproof laminate 3 to 5 percent swell rate: Kitchens. Commercial spaces with moderate moisture. Rooms where you want the best moisture protection from a wood based product.

SPC or LVT 0 percent swell rate: Bathrooms basements laundry rooms any area with standing water risk.

The Honest Bottom Line

If you need flooring for a bathroom or basement choose SPC. The thickness swell rate is 0 percent. No water damage. No swelling. No replacement needed from moisture.

If you want laminate for dry areas the standard product is fine. If you need some moisture protection for a kitchen choose a water resistant or super waterproof rated laminate at 5 to 10 percent swell rate.
