LVT Flooring Stair Nose and Edge Finishing Complete Guide

A professional LVT installation is not just about the planks on the floor. The edges, transitions, and stair connections determine the final look. This guide covers the finishing profiles available for LVT and how to use them.

Stair Nose Profiles

Stair nose is a specialized profile that covers the edge of the stair tread. It provides a finished look and creates a safe walking surface. For LVT flooring, stair nose profiles are available to match the floor color and texture.

LVT stair nose is typically made from solid PVC or aluminum with a vinyl coating. The profile has a rounded edge that extends slightly beyond the stair tread. This creates a smooth transition between the floor and the stair.

Stair nose should be installed after the LVT planks are in place. The profile covers the cut edge of the planks where they meet the stair. Use adhesive to secure the stair nose to the subfloor and the LVT edge.

For glue down LVT on stairs, the stair nose can be adhered directly with construction adhesive. For click lock LVT at the top of stairs, the stair nose should be installed with adhesive and mechanically fastened when possible.

T-Molding Transitions

A T-molding is used where two floors of similar height meet. The profile has a T shape that fits into a track between the two flooring surfaces. T-moldings cover the gap between rooms and allow both floors to expand independently.

For LVT to LVT transitions, a standard T-molding works well. The gap between the two LVT areas should be 6mm to 10mm. The T-molding track is installed in the gap and the molding snaps into place.

For LVT to tile transitions, use a T-molding designed for different thicknesses. Tile is often thicker than LVT. An offset T-molding accommodates the height difference.

Reducer Strips

A reducer strip transitions between LVT and a thinner flooring material such as sheet vinyl or laminate. The reducer has a tapered edge that slopes down to the thinner floor. This creates a smooth transition without a trip hazard.

Reducer strips are available in heights from 3mm to 12mm. Choose the height that matches the thickness difference between the two floors.

For LVT typically 4mm to 5mm thick transitioning to sheet vinyl which is 2mm to 3mm thick, use a reducer with 2mm to 3mm height difference.

Quarter Round and Baseboard

Where the LVT meets the wall, the expansion gap must be covered. Quarter round or base shoe molding is installed along the baseboard. This covers the gap and provides a finished look.

Quarter round should be installed after the LVT is in place. Nail or glue the quarter round to the baseboard, not to the LVT. The LVT needs to remain free to expand and contract. Attaching molding to the LVT restricts movement and can cause buckling.

The gap between the quarter round and the LVT should be 1mm to 2mm. The baseboard covers the gap above, and the quarter round covers it below.

End Cap Profiles

End cap profiles are used where LVT meets a different flooring type that is lower, such as carpet. The end cap has a flat top that sits on the LVT and a tapered edge that slopes down to the carpet.

End caps are also used at doorways where the threshold height changes. Install the end cap under the door for a clean transition between rooms.

Installation Tips for Stair Nose

Measure each stair separately. Stairs are rarely perfectly identical. Cut the stair nose to length for each individual stair. Use adhesive rated for LVT and the subfloor material. Apply adhesive to both the subfloor and the back of the stair nose. Press firmly and hold for 30 seconds. Use painters tape to hold the stair nose in place while the adhesive cures. Remove tape after 24 hours.
