Laminate Flooring Installation Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Installing laminate flooring yourself can save money. But mistakes during installation can ruin the floor. Here are the most common mistakes and how to avoid each one.
Mistake 1 Skipping Acclimation
Laminate planks need to adjust to the room temperature and humidity before installation. Skipping this step causes the planks to expand or contract after installation. Gaps appear between planks in dry seasons. Buckling occurs in humid seasons.
How to avoid: Keep unopened cartons in the room for 48 hours before installation. Keep the room temperature stable during acclimation between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius.
Mistake 2 Not Leaving Enough Expansion Gap
Laminate expands and contracts with temperature and humidity changes. Without enough space around the perimeter, the floor buckles. The expansion gap for laminate must be 8mm to 12mm around all walls and fixed objects.
How to avoid: Use spacers during installation. Do not remove them until after the floor is complete and trim is ready to install.
Mistake 3 Installing Over an Unlevel Subfloor
Laminate follows the shape of the subfloor. If the subfloor has high spots or dips, the laminate will creak and the locking system may fail.
How to avoid: Check flatness with a 2 meter level before installation. Maximum allowed variation is 3mm over 2 meters. Use self leveling compound on concrete subfloors. Sand high spots on wood subfloors.
Mistake 4 Using the Wrong Underlayment
Thick underlayment makes the floor feel soft but causes locking system failure. Laminate needs underlayment but it should not be thicker than 3mm.
How to avoid: Use underlayment specifically designed for laminate flooring. Check the thickness. Do not double layer underlayment.
Mistake 5 Not Staggering Planks Properly
If the end joints line up too closely between rows, the floor looks unnatural and the joints are weak. The minimum stagger distance for laminate is 12 inches.
How to avoid: Start each row with the offcut from the previous row. This creates a natural stagger pattern. Make sure the offcut is at least 12 inches long.
Mistake 6 Installing in Wet Areas
Laminate should not be installed in bathrooms, laundry rooms, or basements with moisture issues. Water damage is the most common cause of laminate failure.
How to avoid: Choose vinyl or tile for wet areas. Only install laminate in dry areas.
Mistake 7 Forcing the Last Row
The last row of planks usually needs to be cut lengthwise to fit. Forcing full width planks into the last row causes the floor to buckle.
How to avoid: Measure the remaining space and cut the last row planks to the correct width. Use a pull bar to lock them into place.
Mistake 8 Not Using Trim Properly
Transition strips are needed at doorways and where laminate meets other flooring. Skipping them causes the edges to chip and wear.
How to avoid: Install T-moldings at doorways. Use reducer strips where laminate meets lower flooring. Use quarter round to cover the expansion gap at walls.
