SPC Flooring and Heavy Furniture What You Need to Know 2024

Heavy furniture can cause problems with SPC flooring if not handled correctly. This guide explains how to prevent damage from wardrobes kitchen cabinets and other heavy items.

How Heavy Furniture Affects SPC Flooring

SPC flooring is a floating floor system. It must be free to expand and contract with temperature changes. Heavy furniture can restrict this movement. A large wardrobe or kitchen island sitting directly on the floor can trap the planks. When the floor tries to expand the trapped area lifts up or buckles. Heavy point loads from furniture legs can also create indentations in the floor surface.

Prevention Tips

Install large fixed furniture before laying the flooring whenever possible. This allows the floor to float freely around the furniture. Leave expansion space under fixed furniture. At least 5mm of space around the base of cabinets allows the floor to move. Use furniture pads or coasters under heavy furniture legs. This distributes the weight and prevents indentations. Avoid placing very heavy items on SPC flooring installed over thick soft underlayment. The soft underlayment allows more movement under weight.

What to Do If Damage Has Occurred

If furniture has caused buckling remove the furniture and check the expansion space. If the floor has indented from furniture legs the indentations may recover over time. For permanent damage replace the affected planks.
