SPC Flooring Installation Guide: Step by Step for DIY 2023
SPC flooring is one of the easiest flooring types to install yourself. The click-lock system requires no glue, no nails, and no special tools. With basic preparation and patience, most homeowners can install SPC flooring in a weekend. This guide walks you through every step.
Tools You Will Need
Tape measure, utility knife, straight edge or square, tapping block and pull bar, spacers, jigsaw or circular saw with fine tooth blade, rubber mallet, safety glasses and knee pads. Most of these tools can be rented or bought for under 50 dollars total.
Step 1: Prepare the Subfloor
The subfloor must be clean, dry, and flat. Remove any existing carpet, vinyl, or debris. Check flatness with a straight edge. Any bumps or dips over 3mm within 2 meters must be leveled. Use self-leveling compound for low spots and sand down high spots. Sweep and vacuum thoroughly.
Step 2: Acclimate the Flooring
SPC flooring does not require long acclimation like laminate or hardwood. Let the planks sit in the installation room for 24 hours at normal room temperature. This allows the material to adjust to the room temperature and humidity.
Step 3: Install the Underlayment
Some SPC flooring comes with attached underlayment. If yours does not, roll out a separate underlayment. For concrete subfloors, use a vapor barrier underlayment. For multi-story buildings, choose an underlayment with sound reduction. Overlap seams by 2 to 3 inches and tape the seams.
Step 4: Plan Your Layout
Measure the room width and calculate the width of the last row. If the last row is less than half a plank width, cut the first row narrower so both the first and last rows are similar width. This creates a balanced look. Plan to stagger end joints by at least 6 inches between rows.
Step 5: Install the First Row
Start in the left corner of the longest wall. Place spacers between the wall and the planks to maintain a 1/4 inch expansion gap. Connect the end joints of the first row by inserting the tongue into the groove at a slight angle and pressing down until it clicks. Use the tapping block to ensure tight seams.
Step 6: Install Remaining Rows
Start each new row with the cut piece from the previous row to stagger the joints. Connect the long sides first by angling the new plank into the previous row and pressing down. Then connect the end joints. Use the pull bar for planks near walls where you cannot reach with your hands.
Step 7: Cut Around Obstacles
For door frames, cut the plank upside down to mark the correct position. Use a jigsaw for curved cuts around pipes. Leave the expansion gap around all obstacles. Door jamb cuts should slide under the trim for a clean look.
Step 8: Install Transitions and Trim
After all planks are installed, remove the spacers. Install quarter round or baseboard to cover the expansion gap. Use T-molding for doorways between rooms. Use reducer strips where SPC meets a lower floor surface like carpet or tile.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Not checking subfloor flatness is the most common mistake. An uneven subfloor causes clicking noises and joint separation later.
Not leaving expansion gaps causes buckling when temperature changes.
Not staggering joints properly creates a weak floor pattern that can separate.
Using too much force when connecting planks can damage the locking mechanism. Let the click happen naturally.
