SPC Flooring Maintenance Guide: Cleaning and Care Tips 2023

SPC flooring is one of the easiest flooring types to maintain. With proper care, it will look great for a decade or more. This guide covers daily cleaning, deep cleaning, and long-term maintenance.

Daily Cleaning

Sweep or dust mop daily to remove dirt and grit. Dirt particles act like sandpaper and can scratch the wear layer over time. Use a soft-bristle broom or microfiber dust mop. Avoid traditional brooms that can leave scratches.

Vacuum weekly using a vacuum designed for hard floors. Turn off the beater bar if your vacuum has one. The beater bar can scratch the floor surface.

Weekly Cleaning

Damp mop with water and a pH-neutral cleaner designed for vinyl flooring. Avoid vinegar, bleach, ammonia, or harsh chemicals. These can damage the wear layer over time. Use a well-wrung mop. Excess water can seep into the seams and reach the subfloor. Never pour water directly onto the floor and let it pool. Dry the floor with a clean cloth or allow to air dry.

Stain Removal

Most spills wipe up easily with a damp cloth. For stubborn stains, use a vinyl flooring cleaner or isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth. Test in an inconspicuous area first. Avoid abrasive scrub brushes or scouring pads. These will scratch the wear layer.

For gum or adhesive residue, apply ice to harden the material and gently scrape with a plastic scraper. Use a vinyl flooring cleaner for any remaining residue.

What to Avoid

Avoid steam mops. The heat and moisture can damage the locking mechanism and cause the planks to separate. Avoid wax, polish, or floor finish products. SPC has a factory-applied finish that does not need additional coating. Avoid bleach, ammonia, and vinegar-based cleaners. These can dull the wear layer over time. Avoid abrasive cleaning tools like steel wool, scrub brushes, or hard-bristle brooms.

Long-Term Care

Place walk-off mats at exterior doors to trap dirt before it reaches the floor. Use felt pads under furniture legs to prevent scratches and indentations. Avoid dragging heavy furniture across the floor. Lift and place instead. Trim pets nails regularly to prevent scratches. Use a chair mat under office chairs to prevent wear from rolling.

When to Replace SPC Flooring

With proper maintenance, SPC flooring lasts 10 to 15 years for residential use and 5 to 10 years for commercial use. Signs that replacement is needed include wear layer worn through in high-traffic areas, locking mechanism failure causing gaps between planks, and deep scratches or gouges that cannot be removed.
