SPC Flooring Subfloor Preparation Complete Guide 2025
Proper subfloor preparation is the most important factor in a successful SPC flooring installation. Most flooring problems start with an inadequate subfloor. This guide covers everything you need to know.
Flatness Requirements
The subfloor must be flat within 3mm over 2 meters or 5mm over 3 meters. Use a straight edge to check for high and low spots. Mark any areas that exceed the tolerance. Fill low spots with self leveling compound. Grind down high spots with a floor grinder. Check again after leveling to confirm flatness.
Cleanliness
The subfloor must be completely clean. Sweep and vacuum thoroughly. Remove any debris dust or old adhesive residue. Small debris under the flooring can cause noise and damage the locking system. Wash the subfloor if needed and let it dry completely.
Moisture Requirements
Concrete subfloors must be fully cured before installation. Test the concrete moisture level. Acceptable moisture is below 95 percent RH. Use a moisture meter or calcium chloride test kit. If moisture is too high install a vapor barrier underlayment. Do not install SPC over damp concrete.
Surface Preparation
Fill cracks and holes in the subfloor. Remove any loose material. Prime the subfloor if recommended by the leveling compound manufacturer. Ensure the surface is smooth and even for the underlayment.
Special Cases
Existing tile floors can be installed over if they are flat and firmly attached. Fill grout lines before installation. Existing vinyl floors can be installed over if they are well bonded. Remove any loose or damaged vinyl. Radiant heating systems must be turned off and cooled before installation.
Common Mistakes
Skipping the flatness check is the most common mistake. An uneven subfloor causes multiple problems. Installing over dirty subfloors traps debris under the flooring. Installing over damp concrete leads to mold and failure.
