SPC Flooring Thickness Guide: 4mm vs 5mm vs 6mm vs 8mm
Choosing the right thickness for SPC flooring can be confusing. Many buyers assume thicker is always better, but that is not always the case. The best thickness depends on where you are installing, your subfloor condition, and your budget. This guide explains the differences and helps you decide.
SPC flooring thickness is measured from the bottom of the core to the top of the wear layer. Common thicknesses are 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, and 8mm. The core thickness is the main difference between these options.
4mm SPC Flooring
4mm is the thinnest SPC option. It is lightweight and economical. A 20ft container holds approximately 2,900 square meters under 25 tons weight limit. This thickness is suitable for commercial applications with flat subfloors where cost per square meter is a priority. However, 4mm requires a very flat subfloor because it will telegraph any imperfections. It also feels less solid underfoot compared to thicker options.
Best for: Large commercial projects, temporary spaces, and applications where cost is the primary concern.
Not ideal for: Residential living areas, uneven subfloors, or spaces where comfort underfoot matters.
5mm SPC Flooring
5mm is the most popular thickness for both residential and commercial use. It offers a good balance of durability, comfort, and cost. A 20ft container holds approximately 2,300 square meters under 25 tons weight limit. The extra millimeter compared to 4mm provides noticeably better stability and feel. Most 5mm SPC flooring can handle subfloor irregularities up to 3mm.
Best for: Most residential applications, rental properties, light commercial spaces, and DIY installations.
6mm SPC Flooring
6mm is considered the premium residential thickness. It feels solid and substantial underfoot. A 20ft container holds approximately 1,900 square meters under 25 tons weight limit. The thicker core provides better sound absorption and hides subfloor imperfections more effectively than thinner options. 6mm SPC is also more forgiving on subfloors with minor unevenness.
Best for: High-end residential projects, main living areas, bedrooms, and spaces where comfort matters.
8mm SPC Flooring
8mm is the thickest SPC option available. A 20ft container holds approximately 1,450 square meters under 25 tons weight limit. The additional thickness provides maximum stability and the most solid feel underfoot. However, 8mm SPC is heavier, more expensive, and may require transition strips when connecting to thinner flooring in adjacent rooms.
Best for: Commercial high-traffic areas, spaces with slightly uneven subfloors, and projects where durability is the top priority.
Thickness Comparison Summary
4mm is the budget option suitable for flat commercial subfloors.
5mm is the all-around best value for most residential and light commercial projects.
6mm is the premium residential choice for maximum comfort and stability.
8mm is the heavy-duty choice for commercial spaces with heavy traffic.
Factors to Consider Beyond Thickness
Wear layer thickness is different from overall plank thickness. The wear layer protects against scratches and wear. For residential use, 0.3mm to 0.5mm wear layer is sufficient. For commercial use or rental properties, choose 0.5mm or higher regardless of overall plank thickness.
Subfloor condition matters more than thickness. A perfectly flat subfloor makes even 4mm SPC perform well. An uneven subfloor will cause problems with any thickness. Always check subfloor flatness before installation.
Installation method is the same for all thicknesses. All SPC flooring uses click-lock installation regardless of thickness. No glue or special tools are needed for different thicknesses.
