What Is the Warranty on SPC Flooring: Standard Terms Explained 2023

When buying SPC flooring, the warranty is an important factor to consider. Different manufacturers offer different warranty terms for residential and commercial use. This guide explains what standard warranties cover and what they do not.

Residential Warranty

Most quality SPC flooring manufacturers offer a limited lifetime residential warranty. This typically covers defects in manufacturing such as core delamination, wear layer peeling, locking system failure, or excessive wear beyond normal use. The warranty period varies by brand. Some offer 15 years, others offer 25 years, and premium brands offer lifetime coverage.

Residential warranty typically covers the original purchaser in the original installation location. Most warranties are transferable to a new homeowner at a reduced coverage period. Proper installation according to manufacturer guidelines is required for warranty validity.

Commercial Warranty

Commercial warranties are shorter than residential because commercial use involves more traffic. Standard commercial warranty is 5 to 10 years for light commercial use and 3 to 5 years for heavy commercial use.

Wear layer coverage is critical for commercial warranty. A 0.5mm wear layer typically carries a 5 to 7 year commercial warranty. A 0.7mm wear layer carries a 7 to 10 year commercial warranty. Some manufacturers offer different warranty terms for different product lines within the same brand.

What Is Covered

Manufacturing defects in the core material. Wear layer delamination or peeling. Locking system failure caused by manufacturing defect. Excessive wear beyond normal use for the warranty period. Color fading beyond acceptable standards.

What Is Not Covered

Damage from improper installation or subfloor preparation. Damage from flooding, fire, or natural disasters. Damage from improper cleaning products or methods. Indentations from heavy furniture or high heels. Damage from pets nails or claws. Normal wear and tear over time. Color variation between batches. Products installed in commercial applications under a residential warranty.

How to Make a Warranty Claim

Document the issue with photos and measurements. Contact the manufacturer with your proof of purchase, installation date, and product batch number. Include a description of the problem and photos showing the defect. Most manufacturers will send a representative to inspect the claim for significant issues.

Manufacturer vs Distributor Warranty

Some warranties are offered by the manufacturer directly. Others are offered by the distributor. Manufacturer warranties are generally more reliable because the manufacturer controls the product quality. Check who is backing the warranty before purchasing.
