Where NOT to Install SPC Flooring Complete Guide 2024
SPC flooring is versatile but it is not suitable for every surface or environment. Installing SPC in the wrong place can cause damage and void your warranty. This guide covers the places where SPC should not be installed.
Outdoor Areas
SPC flooring is not designed for outdoor use. Direct sunlight rain and temperature extremes will damage the flooring. The UV coating protects against indoor sunlight through windows but not continuous outdoor exposure. The locking system can fail when exposed to moisture and temperature changes outside. SPC will warp and fade within months if installed outdoors. Some manufacturers offer outdoor rated vinyl products but standard SPC is for indoor use only.
Unstable Subfloors
SPC requires a stable subfloor. Do not install over loose or crumbling concrete. The movement will transfer to the flooring and cause locking joint failure. Do not install over wood subfloors with significant rot or water damage. The subfloor must be sound before SPC installation. Do not install directly over existing carpet or padded flooring. The soft surface will cause the locking system to fail. Remove all carpet and padding before installation.
Areas With Standing Water
SPC is waterproof at the plank level but standing water can seep through the seams. Do not install in areas prone to flooding like below grade basements without proper drainage. Do not install in rooms where water regularly pools on the floor for extended periods like commercial car washes or industrial wash down areas. The seams are the weak point. Continuous water exposure will eventually reach the subfloor and cause mold problems.
Extreme Temperature Environments
SPC has temperature limits. Do not install in unheated spaces where temperatures drop below 4 degrees Celsius. The flooring can become brittle in extreme cold. Do not install in rooms that exceed 30 degrees Celsius surface temperature regularly. Sunrooms with large windows and no climate control can damage SPC. Do not install directly over fireplaces or wood stoves without proper subfloor protection. The heat can deform the planks.
Outdoor Kitchens and Patio Areas
Outdoor kitchens and covered patios may seem suitable but they are not recommended for SPC. Humidity changes and temperature swings will affect the flooring. Even covered outdoor areas experience more moisture and temperature variation than indoor spaces. Use tile or stone for outdoor kitchen areas.
Areas Requiring Heavy Moisture or Chemical Cleaning
Some commercial environments require frequent heavy cleaning with chemicals. Do not install SPC in industrial kitchens or food processing areas where steam cleaning is used. The heat and moisture can damage the locking system. Do not install in areas where harsh chemicals are regularly used. Chemical cleaners can damage the wear layer over time.
Installations Without Proper Acclimation
Do not install SPC without allowing 24 to 48 hours of acclimation in the installation room. The flooring needs to adjust to the room temperature and humidity. Skipping acclimation is one of the most common causes of post installation problems.
Installations Over Multiple Layers
Do not install SPC over existing floating floors. The movement between layers will cause noise and locking failure. Remove all existing flooring down to the subfloor before installation.
Unlevel Subfloors
Do not install SPC over subfloors that exceed the flatness tolerance of 3mm over 2 meters. The locking system will not perform correctly and planks may separate. Always level the subfloor before installation.
