Why Is My SPC Flooring Making Noise Causes and Fixes 2024
A noisy floor can be frustrating. Clicking or squeaking sounds when walking on SPC flooring are usually caused by subfloor issues not product defects. This guide explains the causes and solutions.
What Causes Noise in SPC Flooring
Most noise issues are caused by low spots in the subfloor. The unsupported area flexes when stepped on creating a clicking sound. The noise comes from the locking joint moving slightly under pressure. This is usually not a product quality issue. Gaps between the underlayment and subfloor can also cause noise. Debris left under the flooring during installation can create localized noise.
How to Identify the Problem Area
Walk across the floor and mark where the noise occurs. Check the subfloor in those areas for flatness using a straight edge. Look for visible gaps or movement between planks in the noisy area.
How to Fix Noisy SPC Flooring
For minor noise caused by small low spots the noise may settle over time as the flooring adjusts. For persistent noise remove the affected planks, check the subfloor flatness, and level any low spots. Reinstall the planks on the corrected subfloor. Ensure no debris is trapped under the flooring during reinstallation.
Prevention
Inspect subfloor flatness before installation. The subfloor should be flat within 3mm over 2 meters. Clean the subfloor thoroughly before installing underlayment. Use manufacturer recommended underlayment thickness. Allow the flooring to acclimate before installation.
Key Point
Most noise issues are related to installation conditions not product quality. Proper subfloor preparation prevents most noise problems.
