Why More SPC Flooring Buyers Are Looking at Vietnam Manufacturing

The sourcing landscape for SPC flooring has been changing. More buyers are asking about Vietnam as an alternative to China for US bound shipments. This article explains the real differences from a manufacturer with factories in both countries.

The Tariff Advantage

The main reason buyers consider Vietnam is the tariff difference. SPC flooring from China faces Section 301 tariffs on top of the normal duty rate. Vietnam does not have these additional tariffs. For US importers this adds significant cost per container.

The duty rate alone makes a meaningful difference. For buyers importing multiple containers per month, the savings add up substantially over time. This cost advantage is the primary driver of the shift.

Production Quality in Vietnam

Vietnamese factories use equipment imported from China. The production lines are the same models used in Chinese factories. Production engineers from China supervise the initial setup and train local teams. The result is that product quality from Vietnam matches Chinese production.

Raw materials are sourced differently. PVC resin is imported from China. Limestone powder is sourced locally in Vietnam, often with higher mesh count and better purity than Chinese sources. This means the core quality can actually be equal to or better than Chinese production.

Some manufacturers position their Vietnam factory for the US market and their China factory for the rest of the world. This allows them to offer the same product quality with the tariff advantage for American buyers.

Lead Time Reality

Production lead time in Vietnam is approximately 5 days longer than in China. This is because the supply chain is less mature. Raw materials that are readily available in China must be shipped to Vietnam first.

Shipping time from Vietnam to the US West Coast is also approximately 5 days longer than from China. Vietnam ports have improved significantly but transit routes are slightly longer.

Total lead time difference: 10 days. Production plus 5 days. Shipping plus 5 days. For buyers with good inventory planning and consistent ordering schedules, this difference is manageable.

Who Should Buy From Vietnam

Vietnam is best suited for experienced importers who plan their orders in advance. Buyers who maintain consistent reorder cycles and have 4 to 6 weeks of inventory buffer can easily accommodate the extra 10 days.

Vietnam is also ideal for buyers importing to the US who want to minimize tariff costs. The savings per container offset the slightly longer lead time.

Buyers who need fast turnaround or have irregular ordering patterns may prefer sourcing from China where production and shipping are faster.
