Can LVT Flooring Be Installed in Bathrooms What You Need to Know
Many people ask about LVT for bathrooms. LVT is called waterproof but bathrooms are a special case. This guide explains the honest answer from a manufacturer perspective.
The Waterproof Question
LVT is made from PVC. The material itself does not absorb water. If you place an LVT plank in water the plank will not swell or rot. This is where the waterproof claim comes from.
However a bathroom floor is not about the material alone. The floor has seams between planks. Water from showers sinks and toilets can seep through these seams. Once water reaches the subfloor problems begin.
Glue down LVT seals the edges with adhesive. Over time moisture can still work through the seams and break down the adhesive bond. The planks may loosen and need replacement.
Click lock LVT has locking joints. Water can enter through these joints and pool under the floor. The underlayment traps moisture and the subfloor may develop mold.
Neither option is ideal for a wet bathroom environment.
What About SPC
SPC flooring is sometimes recommended for bathrooms. But SPC has a stone plastic composite core. The core contains limestone powder. When moisture gets underneath and is trapped, the limestone can absorb moisture over time. The core may degrade or the floor may develop issues around the joints. SPC is not a guaranteed bathroom solution either.
Honest Bathroom Advice
If you want the safest bathroom floor choose ceramic tile or porcelain tile. These materials are designed for wet environments and do not have seam concerns.
If you must use LVT in a bathroom choose glue down LVT with full perimeter silicone sealing. Use a high quality adhesive rated for wet areas. Seal all edges including around the toilet, shower, and vanity. Be aware that even with these precautions the floor may need replacement sooner than in a dry area.
What to Expect
LVT in a bathroom will not last as long as LVT in a living room or bedroom. The constant moisture exposure and cleaning chemicals accelerate wear. Warranty coverage for bathroom installations may be limited. Check with the manufacturer.
The best approach is to use the right material for the right room. LVT is excellent for living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and commercial spaces. For bathrooms consider tile or a fully waterproof sheet vinyl option.
