Does Waterproof Laminate Need Underlayment and Moisture Barrier

Many homeowners assume waterproof laminate does not need underlayment or a moisture barrier. The product is waterproof after all. The reality is different. The waterproof rating applies to the surface. The subfloor can still damage the laminate from below.

Why Underlayment Is Still Needed

Underlayment serves several purposes beyond moisture protection. It smooths minor subfloor imperfections. It provides sound reduction. It adds comfort underfoot.

Some laminate products have attached underlayment. These do not need separate underlayment. Most laminate products do not have attached underlayment and require separate underlayment.

Check the product specification. Some warranties require specific underlayment to remain valid.

Moisture Barrier Requirements

Concrete subfloors release moisture vapor. This vapor can rise through the laminate core and cause swelling. Standard laminate on concrete without a vapor barrier will eventually develop problems.

The moisture barrier is typically a 6 mil polyethylene sheet. It is installed between the subfloor and the underlayment. The seams are taped. The barrier extends up the walls by 2 inches.

Even waterproof laminate benefits from a vapor barrier on concrete. The waterproof rating protects against surface spills. It does not protect against continuous moisture vapor from below.

When a Moisture Barrier Is Not Needed

Wood subfloors above grade typically do not need a vapor barrier. The wood subfloor allows moisture to escape. Check local building codes for specific requirements.

Products with a pre attached vapor barrier underlayment do not need separate vapor barrier. The attached layer provides both cushioning and moisture protection.

Consequences of Skipping the Moisture Barrier

Moisture from the subfloor causes the same damage as spills. The core swells. The planks buckle. The damage is often mistaken for a product defect when it is actually an installation issue.

The cost of a vapor barrier is minimal compared to replacing a damaged floor.
