What Is Waterproof Laminate Flooring Complete Guide
Waterproof laminate flooring came onto the market as a response to the biggest weakness of traditional laminate: moisture damage. Regular laminate swells when water sits on it. Waterproof laminate is designed to handle spills and humidity better. But how waterproof is it really? This guide covers the technology and the truth.
How Waterproof Laminate Is Different From Regular Laminate
Regular laminate flooring has a fiberboard core made from compressed wood fibers. This core absorbs water like a sponge. When moisture gets in, the core expands and the planks swell permanently. Once this happens, the only fix is replacement.
Waterproof laminate addresses this problem in two ways:
1. The fiberboard core is treated with a water resistant coating or wax
2. A denser core formulation that absorbs less moisture
Some manufacturers SPC infuse the core with resins that repel water. Others coat each fiber particle before pressing. The result is a core that can handle surface moisture for longer periods without swelling.
Not All Waterproof Laminate Is Equal
There are different levels of waterproof performance. Some products are rated for 24 hours of standing water. Others are only resistant to spills that are wiped up within a few minutes. The difference is in the core density and the quality of the edge seal.
The locking mechanism is another weak point. Water can seep through the joint between planks even if the core itself is treated. Better products apply a wax coating to the locking edges to seal the joints.
Waterproof Laminate vs SPC Flooring
This is the honest answer most people need. SPC flooring has a stone plastic composite core that contains zero wood fiber. It is genuinely waterproof at the core level. Waterproof laminate still contains wood fiber in the core. It is more water resistant than regular laminate but it is not as waterproof as SPC.
Why would someone choose waterproof laminate over SPC? Cost is the main reason. Waterproof laminate is generally cheaper than SPC. It also looks more like real wood because the surface texture can be more realistic at a lower price point. The feel underfoot is also warmer and softer than SPC.
Where Waterproof Laminate Works Best
Waterproof laminate is suitable for:
- Living rooms and bedrooms where spills are occasional
- Hallways and entryways with moderate traffic
- Home offices and guest rooms
- Rental properties where budget is the main concern
Where waterproof laminate is not recommended:
- Bathrooms with frequent standing water
- Basements with moisture problems
- Commercial kitchens and laundry rooms
- Any area that floods regularly
What To Look For When Buying Waterproof Laminate
Check the product specification for the water resistance rating. Look for products that state the core is treated or infused with water resistant materials. Check the warranty coverage for water damage. Some manufacturers limit water damage claims to 24 hours of exposure.
The wear layer thickness matters for durability. A thicker wear layer means the surface will last longer before showing wear. Most waterproof laminate has a wear layer between 6 and 12 mil. For residential use, 6 to 8 mil is adequate. For commercial use, look for 12 mil or higher.
