Is SPC Flooring Waterproof: Complete Guide 2023
One of the biggest selling points of SPC flooring is that it is waterproof. But what does waterproof actually mean in practice? Can you install SPC in a bathroom? Can it survive a flood? This guide answers these questions clearly.
What Waterproof Means for SPC Flooring
SPC flooring is made from stone plastic composite, a material that does not absorb water. The core will not swell, warp, or rot when exposed to water. This is different from laminate flooring, which has an HDF core that swells when wet.
SPC is 100 percent waterproof at the core level. Water sitting on the surface for short periods will not damage the planks. However, water can seep through the seams between planks and reach the subfloor. The waterproof claim applies to the plank itself, not the entire floor system.
How SPC Compares to Other Flooring
Laminate flooring is not waterproof. Water seeps into the HDF core and causes swelling. Even waterproof laminate has limits.
Hardwood flooring is not waterproof. Water causes staining, warping, and cupping.
WPC flooring is also 100 percent waterproof at the core level, similar to SPC.
Tile and stone are completely waterproof but cold and expensive to install.
Sheet vinyl is fully waterproof but does not look as realistic as SPC.
Where Can You Install SPC
Bathrooms are suitable for SPC flooring. It handles splashes and humidity well. Keep water from pooling at the seams by installing proper trim and sealing the perimeter.
Kitchens are ideal for SPC flooring. Spills from cooking and washing are not a problem.
Basements are popular for SPC flooring. Concrete subfloors in basements often have moisture issues. SPC handles this well.
Laundry rooms and mudrooms are perfect for SPC flooring. These high-moisture areas benefit from waterproof flooring.
What SPC Cannot Handle
Standing water for extended periods can still cause problems. If a pipe burst floods the room, water can get under the flooring through the seams and cause mold on the subfloor.
SPC is waterproof but not flood-proof. Remove the flooring after a flood to dry the subfloor properly.
How to Verify Waterproof Claims
Look for products tested to ISO 24344 or ASTM F2179 standards. These tests confirm the product can withstand water exposure without damage. Ask manufacturers for their water resistance test results. Reputable factories will provide this data.
