Mold Under Laminate Flooring Causes Prevention and What to Know

Mold under laminate flooring is a serious problem. It damages the floor and creates health concerns. Understanding the causes helps you prevent it.

How Mold Develops Under Laminate

Mold requires moisture and organic material to grow. Laminate has an HDF core made from wood fiber. Wood fiber is organic. When moisture reaches the core, mold spores that are naturally present in the environment begin to grow.

Moisture can come from several sources. Concrete subfloor moisture vapor rises through the slab. Leaks from plumbing travel along the subfloor. Flooding or large spills penetrate the locking mechanism. High humidity over long periods affects the core from below.

Mold can begin growing within 24 hours of moisture exposure. Once mold develops, it spreads to adjacent planks and the subfloor.

Common Scenarios

Moisture from the concrete slab is the most common cause. Concrete takes months to cure fully. Even old concrete releases moisture vapor. Without a vapor barrier, the moisture reaches the laminate core.

Slow plumbing leaks are another common cause. The leak goes unnoticed for weeks. Water collects under the laminate. By the time the leak is found, mold has spread.

Flooding is the most serious cause. Water from floods contains contaminants that accelerate mold growth. Flooded laminate must be removed immediately.

Prevention

Install a vapor barrier on concrete subfloors. The barrier must be 6 mil polyethylene with taped seams. This is the most effective prevention method.

Inspect plumbing under sinks and appliances regularly. A small drip can cause significant damage under a laminate floor.

Use a dehumidifier in basements and ground floor rooms. Keep indoor humidity between 40 and 60 percent.

What to Do If Mold Is Found

If mold is visible under the laminate, remove the affected planks. The subfloor must be cleaned and dried. Damaged underlayment must be replaced.

Replacing a few planks is possible if the floor was installed with proper expansion gaps. Contact the manufacturer for replacement plank availability.
