What Does Waterproof Laminate Actually Mean 3% vs 8% vs 15% Swell
Waterproof laminate is one of the most misleading terms in the flooring industry. Almost every laminate product is marketed as waterproof or water resistant. But the numbers tell a very different story. This article explains what waterproof laminate actually means using the industry standard EN 317 thickness swell test.
The EN 317 Standard
EN 317 is the European standard that measures how much laminate swells when exposed to water. A sample is submerged for 24 hours. The thickness increase is measured as a percentage. This number is the most honest way to compare laminate water resistance.
The Three Levels of Laminate Water Resistance
Standard laminate 15 to 25 percent swell. This is basic laminate. The HDF core is untreated. Water reaches the core and the wood fibers swell. Once the swell exceeds 18 percent, the damage is permanent. The plank must be replaced. This product should never be used in kitchens or bathrooms.
Water resistant laminate 8 to 12 percent swell. These products have a treated HDF core, often black in color. The treatment slows water absorption. They can handle spills for 48 to 100 hours. But they still use a wood based core. Given enough time, they will swell.
Super waterproof laminate 3 to 5 percent swell. This is the highest tier. The core uses high density HDF with advanced sealing. Some brands claim 500 hours of water resistance. At 3 to 5 percent swell, the planks are functional but not dimensionally perfect.
Why the Swell Rate Matters
A 15 percent swell rate means a 10mm thick plank becomes 11.5mm thick. The edges rise. The locking mechanism distorts. The floor surface becomes uneven. Adjacent planks are affected.
A 5 percent swell rate means the same plank becomes 10.5mm thick. The change is barely noticeable. The floor remains functional.
A 0 percent swell rate means no change. SPC and LVT have 0 percent swell rates because their cores contain no wood fiber.
The Marketing Reality
Most brands selling waterproof laminate are selling 8 percent or 3 percent swell products. They call it waterproof but the industry standard definition of waterproof is 0 percent swell. Laminate always contains wood fiber. Wood fiber always absorbs water.
The honest term is highly water resistant. Not waterproof.
What This Means for Your Purchase
If the product does not list its swell rate under EN 317, assume it is standard 15 to 25 percent. If it lists 8 percent or lower, it is genuinely water resistant.
For any room with standing water risk, choose SPC or LVT. Their swell rate is 0 percent.
