Common LVT Flooring Problems and How to Fix Them

LVT flooring is durable but issues can occur. Some problems are installation related. Others come from the environment. This guide covers common problems and solutions from a manufacturer perspective.

Problem 1 Gaps Between Planks

After installation or after temperature changes, visible gaps may appear between planks.

Causes include uneven subfloor exceeding 3mm over 2 meters, improper locking engagement where planks are not fully clicked together, temperature changes causing contraction, and insufficient acclimation time.

Solutions: Verify floor flatness before installation. Reinstall affected planks with proper engagement. Maintain stable indoor temperature between 18 and 29 degrees Celsius. Allow 24 to 48 hours acclimation before installation.

Problem 2 Edge Curling or Lifting

Plank edges curl upward creating visible raised edges.

Causes include excessive subfloor moisture, incorrect adhesive application for glue down installations, and no expansion gap left around the perimeter.

Solutions: Control indoor humidity between 35 and 65 percent RH. Use curtains, blinds, or UV protection film on windows. Use manufacturer recommended adhesive. Ensure proper expansion gap around the perimeter.

Problem 3 Hollow Sound or Clicking

The floor sounds hollow when walked on or makes clicking noises.

Causes include subfloor not flat, planks not fully engaged, thin underlayment or no underlayment on uneven subfloor, and loose locking mechanism.

Solutions: Check subfloor flatness before installation. Ensure all planks are fully engaged during installation. Use the correct underlayment thickness. For existing hollow sound, try adding weight on the floor with rugs and furniture.

Problem 4 Scratches on Surface

Scratches appear on the wear layer.

Causes include low wear layer thickness 6 mil or less, sand and grit ground into the surface, pet claws, and moving furniture without protection.

Solutions: Choose higher wear layer thickness for high traffic areas. Use entry mats to trap sand and grit. Trim pet nails regularly. Use felt pads under furniture legs.

Problem 5 Locking Mechanism Failure

Planks separate at the joints or the lock breaks.

Causes include low quality locking system, installation in cold temperatures making planks stiff, subfloor movement, and excessive force during installation.

Solutions: Choose LVT with quality 5G click lock system. Install at room temperature between 18 and 29 degrees Celsius. Prepare subfloor properly. Use the correct tapping block during installation.
