What Is Laminate Flooring Complete Guide Structure Types and Cost
Laminate flooring is one of the most popular flooring options in the US market. It offers the look of hardwood at a lower cost. But many buyers confuse laminate with vinyl or engineered wood. This guide explains exactly what laminate flooring is.
What Is Laminate Flooring Made Of
Laminate is a multi layer product with a photographic image of wood or stone. The top layer is a clear wear layer made of aluminum oxide. This protects against scratches and stains. Below the wear layer is the decorative paper layer. This is a high resolution printed image that gives laminate its realistic appearance. The core layer is made from high density fiberboard HDF. This is compressed wood fiber mixed with resin. The core gives laminate its stability and strength. The bottom layer is a balancing layer that keeps the plank structurally stable and prevents warping from moisture differences between the top and bottom.
Unlike SPC or LVT, laminate does not have a PVC or stone plastic core. The core is wood based. This means laminate is not waterproof. It is water resistant in some products but never fully waterproof.
How Laminate Flooring Is Made
Wood fibers are compressed with resin under high heat and pressure to form HDF boards. The decorative paper is printed with the design. The wear layer is applied on top of the decorative paper. The layers are fused together under heat and pressure. The planks are cut to size and the locking system is profiled on the edges.
Types of Laminate Flooring
Laminate is categorized by thickness and wear layer quality. Thickness ranges from 6mm to 12mm. Thicker planks feel more solid underfoot and install more easily on uneven subfloors. Thinner planks are cheaper but may feel hollow.
The wear layer is measured by AC rating from AC1 to AC5. AC1 and AC2 are for light residential use bedrooms, closets. AC3 is standard for most homes living rooms, hallways. AC4 is for heavy residential or light commercial. AC5 is for commercial spaces with high traffic.
Laminate also comes in different plank widths. Standard is 5 to 7 inches wide. Wide planks 7 to 9 inches look more like real hardwood. Narrow planks are less common.
Laminate vs SPC vs LVT
The main difference is the core material. Laminate has an HDF wood fiber core. SPC has a stone plastic composite core. LVT has a PVC core. Laminate is not waterproof. SPC and LVT are waterproof. Laminate feels warmer and quieter underfoot than SPC. Laminate is less expensive than quality SPC or LVT. Laminate is harder than LVT and more resistant to denting from furniture.
Where Laminate Works Best
Laminate is best for living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and dining rooms. These are dry areas with normal foot traffic. Laminate is not recommended for bathrooms, laundry rooms, or basements with moisture issues. In kitchens laminate can work if spills are cleaned immediately but it is a risk.
AC Rating and Wear Layer
Laminate durability is measured by AC rating from AC1 to AC5. AC1 and AC2 are for light residential use such as bedrooms and closets. AC3 is standard for most homes including living rooms and hallways. AC4 is for heavy residential use or light commercial. AC5 is for commercial spaces with high traffic.
For most homes AC3 is the recommended minimum. AC4 is better for households with children and pets.
