How to Install LVT Flooring Click Lock vs Glue Down Step by Step

LVT flooring can be installed using either click lock or glue down method. Each method has different requirements. This guide covers both methods step by step.

Before Installation Site Requirements

The building must be enclosed and finished. HVAC system must be operational. Temperature must be maintained between 18 and 29 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity must be between 35 and 65 percent.

Acclimation Requirements

Store LVT planks in the installation room for 24 to 48 hours before installation. Do not open the plastic wrapping until ready to install. Keep boxes flat on the floor, not on edges.

Subfloor Requirements

The subfloor must be clean, dry, flat, and structurally sound. Maximum flatness tolerance is 3mm within 2 meters. Concrete moisture must be below 95 percent RH. The subfloor must be free from dust, paint, wax, oil, and other debris.

Storage Warning

Do not store outdoors. Rain and moisture damage packaging and product. Do not stack more than 3 layers flat on pallets. Excessive pressure causes deformation. If packaging gets wet, open immediately, wipe dry, and ventilate before installation.

Click Lock Installation

Step 1: Install a vapor barrier of 6 mil polyethylene film on concrete subfloors. For wood subfloors, no vapor barrier is needed.

Step 2: If the LVT has an attached pad, no underlayment is needed. If there is no attached pad, use a 1mm to 2mm underlayment. Do not use thick underlayment with LVT. It can cause the locking system to fail.

Step 3: Place spacers around the room to maintain an expansion gap of 6mm to 10mm between the flooring and the wall.

Step 4: Start from the left corner of the room. Install the first row with the tongue side facing the wall. Cut the last plank of each row to fit.

Step 5: Angle the next plank into the previous plank at approximately 30 degrees. Rotate down until the lock engages. You should hear a click.

Step 6: Stagger the end joints by at least 6 inches between rows. This creates a stronger floor and better appearance.

Glue Down Installation

Step 1: Prime the subfloor with the recommended primer. Allow it to dry completely.

Step 2: Apply the manufacturer recommended adhesive using a trowel. Spread only enough adhesive for one row at a time. The adhesive will set within the open time specified on the container.

Step 3: Place the LVT planks into the adhesive. Press firmly. Use a roller to ensure full contact.

Step 4: Allow 24 to 48 hours for the adhesive to cure before walking on the floor or moving furniture.

Common Mistake to Avoid

Do not use steam cleaners on LVT. Heat and moisture damage the product. Do not use abrasive or harsh chemical cleaners like bleach or ammonia. Do not allow standing water on the floor for extended periods. Do not drag heavy objects across the floor.
